Box Score EMMITSBURG, Md. - The LIU Brooklyn women's soccer team registered 18 shots and put nine on frame, but Mount St. Mary's came away with a 3-0 win over the Blackbirds on Sunday afternoon. Junior Madison Gomez had a match-high five shots while freshman Marian Awad added four, but LIU failed to find the finishing touch in dropping to 3-11-0 overall and 0-4-0 in Northeast Conference play.
In the early portion of the match, LIU Brooklyn had a number of chances. Awad was stopped in the third minute by Rachel Bourne, a save that led to senior Lucy Gunton-Jones taking a corner kick. Gomez missed wide on a chance moments later then, after senior Jessica Montrose stopped a shot by the Mountaineers in the seventh minute, consecutive shots from Awad and fellow frosh Summer Sofer were off the mark.
The Blackbirds continued to put pressure on, holding a 7-1 advantage in shots from the 15th through the 33rd minutes but could not find the back of the net. The inability to finish came back to haunt the visitors in the closing moments of the half, as Mount scored with just seven seconds on the clock to take a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
With momentum coming out of the locker room, Mount St. Mary's added to its lead just 2:58 following intermission as Kirsten O'Malley scored to make the score 2-0. The score remained the same until the 79th minute, when Mount finished the scoring with its third goal of the contest en route to its first NEC win of the year.
Montrose finished with 11 saves for the Blackbirds, while Bourne closed with nine stops to pickup the shutout win for Mount.
LIU Brooklyn continues its season on Friday, Oct. 16 with a home match against Fairleigh Dickinson at 6:30 p.m.
