FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Freshman
Summer Sofer registered her first collegiate goal in the 78th minute that proved to be the difference as the LIU Brooklyn women's soccer team earned a 1-0 victory over Northeast Conference opponent Sacred Heart on Friday evening. Redshirt sophomore
Allegra Ondrejka assisted on the goal for the Blackbirds, who improved to 5-12-0 on the year and 1-5-0 in NEC play.
The Pioneers got off to a hot start and recorded the first three shots, all of which were saved by senior goalkeeper
Jessica Montrose. Montrose finished her active first half with five saves to keep the contest scoreless. LIU had four shots in the first period, two of which came from junior
Madison Gomez but each of her attempts missed wide.
In the second half, LIU Brooklyn began to establish itself and slowly took control of the contest. Sophomore
Kerri Burns had a shot on frame that was saved by Talia Schwartz in the 65th minute, before Gomez missed on another opportunity wide in the 67th minute.
Junior
Chloe Amaradio had a line-drive shot from distance that was saved by Schwartz in the 76th minute, before the game-winning tally came less than two minutes later. Ondrejka made a nice play to keep possession near the touch line, evading a pair of Sacred Heart defenders before centering a pass to Sofer, who one-touched a shot past Schwartz to put the Blackbirds on top, 1-0.
From there, Montrose made a pair of saves down the stretch to prevent the Pioneers from equalizing the contest and helping the Blackbirds to their first NEC win of the year.
Gomez closed with a game-high six shots while Lindsay Corallo accumulated a team-best four shots for the Pioneers, three of which were on frame.
LIU Brooklyn closes out its home schedule on Sunday, Oct. 25 against Robert Morris at LIU Field. The game will mark the final home match for four Blackbirds:
Erin Fish,
Lucy Gunton-Jones, Montrose and
Mariana Ruas.
