BROOKLYN, N.Y. - A pair of road matches against Northeast Conference opponents are on tap for the LIU Brooklyn women's soccer team this weekend. The Blackbirds will take a short trip to Staten Island for a match against Wagner on Friday, Oct. 9 at 7:00 p.m., before embarking on a trek to Maryland to take on Mount St. Mary's two days later. Both matches are scheduled to be shown on NEC Front Row.
ABOUT THE BLACKBIRDS
LIU Brooklyn suffered a tough 2-1, overtime setback against Saint Francis U. last Friday in the NEC opener for both teams. The Blackbirds opened the scoring in the first half as junior Madison Gomez headed home a free kick taken by senior Lucy Gunton-Jones in the 18th minute. The Red Flash answered in the 35th minute with the equalizer and, after LIU narrowly missed on a couple opportunities late in regulation and early in the extra session, the visitors pounced on a rebound chance in the 96th minute to earn the win.
Two days later, redshirt sophomore Allegra Ondrejka scored her fourth goal this season off assists from Gunton-Jones and freshman Marian Awad, but it was not enough as Central Connecticut picked up a 5-1 win over the Blackbirds. Gunton-Jones now has six assists this season to lead the team and the NEC, while Ondrejka is tied for fourth in the league in goals scored. Gomez, who has three goals and three assists on the year, ranks fourth in the NEC in points with nine.
SCOUTING WAGNER
The Seahawks begin the weekend with a 1-9-1 record and most recently dropped their conference opener at Bryant by a 2-1 margin. Wagner got on the board in the second minute with a goal from Megan Fritz and outshot the Bulldogs 21-9, but were done in by goals in the 42nd and 82nd minutes.
Fritz is the top goal scorer for the Seahawks with four on the year. Four different goalkeepers have seen action this season for WC, led by Kaitlin Flaherty who has started six matches and holds a 1.97 goals-against average. Katie Viscardi started the contest against Bryant, recording one save.
LIU holds a commanding 14-4-0 advantage in the all-time series between the two schools, but Wagner has won each of the last two contests by 1-0 margins.
SCOUTING MOUNT ST. MARY'S
The Mount fell to Fairleigh Dickinson and Saint Francis U. on opening weekend of Northeast Conference play, and hold a 1-12-0 record heading into its match against Central Connecticut on Friday. Emma Blair gave the Mountaineers an early 1-0 lead over the Red Flash on Oct. 4, but a pair of second-half goals led to a 2-1 loss. Blair and Jenna West are tied for the team lead with three goals apiece, with West also leading the team in points with eight.
LIU Brooklyn leads the all-time series with Mount St. Mary's, 13-4-1, and have won the last three matchups including a 5-1 win last season at LIU Field. Madison Gomez had a pair of goals while Lucy Gunton-Jones assisted on three of the team's five markers.
