2015 Northeast Conference Women's Soccer Postseason Awards
BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Three LIU Brooklyn women's soccer student-athletes earned postseason honors from the Northeast Conference, it was announced by the league on Thursday. Senior Lucy Gunton-Jones was named to the All-NEC First Team for the second straight season, junior Madison Gomez picked up second-team honors for the second time in her career, and freshman Marian Awad earned a spot on the NEC's All-Rookie Team.
Gunton-Jones caps her impressive career with the Blackbirds ranked third in career assists with 16, including seven this season which tied for the NEC lead. The Great Yarmouth, England product played in 79 matches through her four seasons which stands in a tie for third on the career list at LIU Brooklyn, and her 75 starts ranks in a tie for fifth in school history. An All-Rookie Team member as a freshman in addition to her two first-team selections, Gunton-Jones also tallied a pair of goals - both penalty kicks - and logged an impressive 6,560 minutes played during her four seasons at LIU.
Gomez was one of the top scorers in the NEC for the second straight year, tallying four goals and three assists to sit just outside the top 10 amongst conference players. Gomez scored a goal and matched an LIU single-game record with three assists in a victory over Saint Peter's, and also found the back of the net against Maine, Saint Francis U. and Robert Morris. Gomez enters her senior season with 12 goals and seven assists, with her goals scored total good for 11th on the LIU Brooklyn career list.
In her first season as a Blackbird, Awad made her presence known with five goals and two assists in 19 matches. The central midfielder scored goals in contests against Saint Peter's, Fordham, NJIT, Wagner and Delaware State, and was one of only four LIU players to start all 19 contests this season. Awad also led the Blackbirds with 47 shots, which ranked second in the NEC behind Golden Boot Award Winner Rachel Hoekstra from Fairleigh Dickinson.
In addition to Hoekstra's major award, her teammate Amanda Goulet was named NEC Player of the Year. Robert Morris head coach John Kowalski picked up NEC Coach of the Year honors, while a pair of Central Connecticut players were named NEC Goalkeeper of the Year (Nicki Turley) and Defender of the Year (Jennifer Cafferky).
