PROVIDENCE, R.I. – In a match that came down to the final singles match on the court, the LIU Brooklyn women's tennis team staged an amazing come-from-behind win Friday night, beating Providence College, 4-3.
The Blackbirds (2-1) rallied back from dropping the doubles point, to take the four singles wins that were needed for victory. Sophomores
Marine Dans and
Isabella Wagener clinched the win for LIU, in the Nos. 2 and 4 singles spot.
The Friars jumped out to an early lead in the match, winning the doubles point. In the No.3 doubles spot, PC took its first win, as Hannah Zangari and Nicole Cyterski beat Wagener and senior
Brittany Thompson, 8-0. In the No.2 doubles spot, LIU's
Caroline Koenigsfeldt and
Nancy Zonneveld battled against Jennifer DeLuca and Amanda Pitocco, but fell in an 8-1 defeat that was closer than the score indicated. With the doubles point clinched in favor of the Friars,
Sanne Louwers and
Marine Dans had to abandon their match in the No.1 spot, where they were beating Alana Prinos and Olivia Hogan, 5-3.
Down early, 1-0, the Blackbirds had to fight to regain footing against the Friars. It wouldn't be easy, however. Providence made it 2-0 with a win in the No.6 singles spot, where Pitocco defeated Thompson, 6-2, 6-2. Zonneveld was able to get the Blackbirds on the board with her win in the No.5 singles spot, beating Zangari, 6-0, 7-5. From there, Providence took a 3-1 lead, with DeLuca's 7-6(4), 6-1 win over Koenigsfeldt in the No.3 spot. The Friars needed just one more win to take the match.
But the Blackbirds continued to battle. Louwers helped LIU make up some ground when she defeated Cyterski in the top singles spot, 7-5, 7-5. And Wagener tied the match up at 3-3, when she beat Hogan, 7-6(3), 6-0 in the No.4 singles spot.
With the two teams tied, the whole match came down to the No.2 singles spot, where Dans was battling it out with Prinos. After falling in the first set, 6-7(5), Dans fought back to take the second set, 6-4, forcing her opponent to a decisive third set. There, Dans pulled out the win, 6-2, giving the Blackbirds the 4-3 win over Providence.
Up next, the Blackbirds take on the University of Rhode Island, Saturday, February 14 at 8 p.m.
