Final Results
LANDOVER, Md. - The LIU Brooklyn men's track and field team won their second straight Northeast Conference Indoor Championship on Sunday afternoon at the Prince George Sports Complex. The Blackbirds won eight of 17 events and finished with 140 points to bring their second trophy in two years back to Brooklyn.
Brendon Rodney and Adam Walker-Khan added more major awards to their collections. Rodney, a repeat champion in two events in 2015, once again was named the NEC Most Valuable Performer and Most Valuable Track Performer, while Walker-Khan earned his second consecutive Field Athlete of the Meet award after winning the long jump yesterday and taking second in the triple jump today.
Central Connecticut was second with 120 points, while Saint Francis U. was third with 86.5, followed by Wagner, Sacred Heart, Fairleigh Dickinson, Mount St. Mary's, Bryant and St. Francis Brooklyn.
Starting off the day for the men, Mikhail Williamson finished 0.08 seconds out of first placing third, taking third in a time of 8.28, in a tight 60-meter hurdles race.
Mica-Jonathan Petit-Homme became a three-time winner in the 500-meter dash, finishing with a time of 1:04.00, over a second better than the second place finisher and his best time of the year. Petit-Homme has now never lost the event at the NEC Championships. Teammate Andi Augustin was third, while Garvey Moore was eighth.
After sharing the title as a result of dead heat in the 400-meter dash last season, Alistair McLean was standing on the top of the podium by himself this year. McLean came in at 48.34, ahead of teammate Brendon Rodney who was second in 48.98. Both were the only two athletes to run under 49 seconds.
Rodney then won his first event of the day, repeating as champion in the 60-meter dash for the second consecutive year. He snuck past top qualifier Saquan Mitchell in to 6.85 help the Blackbirds climb the standings. LIU gained significant points in the event, as Tyquan Dukes was third, Williamson was fourth and Kyle Bennett was eighth.
Rodney found his way back to the top of the podium in the 200-meter dash. The favorite in the event the entire season, Rodney took the gold in a time of 21.21, easily breaking his own conference meet record set last season of 21.48. McLean was second this time around, clocking in at 22.07, while Dukes was fifth overall.
In field action, a win from Amir Armstrong in the triple jump and a second place from Walker-Khan helped but the Blackbirds back on the top of the standings heading into the last event. Armstrong leapt to a mark of 14.96m, a personal best in 2014-15, to win the gold medal. Walker-Khan in came in 14.78m, while Vinh Le also scored points after placing fifth.
Kemar Lewis successfully defended his high jump title, becoming another back-to-back winner for LIU. He was just two centimeters off the NEC meet record, posting a mark of 2.10m. The Blackbirds capped off their day with a victory in the 4x400 relay, with a time of 3:19.30.
The indoor season is not over yet for LIU, with the NCAA Championships still on the horizon. This year's meet takes place March 13-14 at the University of Arkansas.
