WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The LIU Brooklyn women's tennis team dropped the first two matches of spring break in Florida, falling to Toledo, 4-3, and Western Kentucky, 5-2.

In Monday's match against Toledo, the Blackbirds nearly beat the Rockets, but lost the doubles point, in what proved to be the deciding factor. At No.1 doubles, junior Sanne Louwers and sophomore Marine Dans had a win for LIU, beating Pia Rygh and Lauren Thai, 8-5. But Toledo won the doubles point with wins in the Nos. 2 and 3 spots.

In singles, the two teams split right down the middle, with LIU winning at Nos.1, 2 and 3 singles, while Toledo had wins at Nos. 4, 5 and 6. At No.1 singles, Louwers defeated Lexy Pitt, 6-4, 7-6(5), while Dans had a win over Rygh at No.2, 6-0, 6-2. And junior Caroline Koenigsfeldt beat Thais, 7-5, 1-6, 10-1 in the No.3 spot.

Toldeo had a win at No.4, as Sidnay Huck beat Isabella Wagener, 6-3, 7-5, and at No.5, Zonneveld was down 7-5, 1-0 when she defaulted the match. And Kayleigh Hall beat LIU senior Brittany Thomson, 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 6 spot.

The Blackbirds had another tough loss Tuesday, falling to Western Kentucky, 5-2. LIU's lone wins came from senior Nancy Zonneveld and freshman Juweria Hussain, in the Nos. 5 and 6 singles spots. Zonneveld defeated Emily Przystawski, 6-5, 6-7, 10-6, and Hussain beat Gabby Crofford in another three set tiebreaker, 6-1, 4-6, 10-8.

The Blackbirds wrap up spring break with a match against Florida Atlantic University, before taking on St. Francis Brooklyn, Monday, March 16 at 1 p.m.
