JERSEY CITY, N.J. - The LIU Brooklyn women's tennis team had a strong team win Friday afternoon, as just four members of the Blackbird squad played, but were able to beat Saint Peter's University, 4-3.

The Blackbirds (5-5) swept the doubles point, and were able to take three of the four singles wins to take the match from the Peacocks.

LIU got two of the doubles wins in the top two spots, clinching the point despite forfeiting in the No.3 spot. At No.2 doubles, sophomore Marine Dans and freshman Juweria Hussain beat Malieve Hedberg and Elana Puigventos, 8-2. And seniors Sanne Louwers and Nancy Zonneveld clinched the point with a win in the No.1 spot, where they beat Adina Halagian and Lucia Radovic, 8-6.

Up 1-0 heading into singles, the Blackbirds forfeited in the Nos. 5 and 6 singles spots, giving the home team a 2-1 lead. Radovic's win over Hussain in the No.4 spot, 6-1, 6-1, gave SPU the 3-1 advantage, and the Peacocks needed just one point to take the team win.

But LIU didn't make it easy. In the No.2 singles spot, Dans made quick work of Hedberg, beating her 6-0, 6-1. Louwers added another point for LIU in the top singles spot, beating Halagian, 6-2, 6-3, and the two teams were tied, 3-3.

The match came down to the No.3 singles spot, where Zonneveld was battling it out with Puigventos. After winning the first set, 6-3, Zonnveld saw her opponent rally to win the second set, 3-6. With her match and the team match on the line, Zonneveld pulled out the third set win, taking the victory in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (4), to give LIU the 4-3 team win.

Up next, the Blackbirds take on Albany on the road, March 29 at 1 p.m., before beginning Northeast Conference play in earnest in April.
