BROOKLYN, N.Y. - LIU Brooklyn rising sophomore Angie Vazquez will compete for the Mexican Junior National Team in the upcoming World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) Junior Women's World Championships in Oklahoma City, Okla. on Aug. 9-15. Vazquez, who just completed her freshman season with the Blackbirds, joined the team in Mexico for two weeks in late July in preparation for the 18-team tournament.
Vazquez helped the Blackbirds to a record-setting offensive season in her freshman campaign, belting three of a school record-tying 43 home runs as LIU advanced to the Northeast Conference championship game for the fourth straight season. The Santa Ana, Calif. product started 51 contests, primarily at third base, while recording 34 hits and driving in 19 runs.
Mexico will begin play on Sunday, Aug. 9 with two contests against Brazil and Italy, before taking on Colombia and the United States the following day. Placement games will begin on Tuesday, Aug. 11 before championship round play commences on Aug. 13.
