READING, Pa. - The LIU Brooklyn bowling team concluded play at the Bud Whitman Memorial hosted by Kutztown University Sunday. The No.13 Blackbirds went 3-2 in traditional play to finish the weekend with an 8-2 record, and third overall out of 19 teams.
LIU went 5-0 yesterday to finish second in the baker portion of the tournament, with a pinfall of 4,969. Sunday, the Blackbirds had a pinball of 4,748, behind tournament champion No.12 Delaware State and No.15 Saint Francis U. Junior
Lauren McKowen led LIU on day two, with a 211.4 average, and a total of 1,057 pins, earning All-Tournament honors for her efforts. Junior
Marlee Tyler was LIU's other top-15 finisher, as she finished with a 201.4 average on the day, and 1,007 total pins.
In the first match of the day, McKowen helped lead LIU to a 1,027-944 win over Chestnut Hill College. McKowen bowled a 254, while junior
Kristina Genova bowled a 209, and
Madison Lukosius bowled a 201. In the second match of the day, the Blackbirds faced off against eventual tournament champions No.12 Delaware State, falling 1101-934. Junior
Marlee Tyler led LIU in that match, finishing with a 208. The Blackbirds then took on host Kutztown, ranked No. 17 in the nation, and lost a close battle, 853-849. Tyler led LIU in the loss with a 202.
The Blackbirds then bounced back with two big wins. LIU beat Virginia State, 997-761, led by McKowen's 235, and a 210 from sophomore
Kayla Johnson. In the final match of the day, LIU beat Daemen, 941-770. Tyler once again led LIU, bowing a 212, while freshman
Tyler Karpinecz had a 203 for the Blackbirds.
Up next, the Blackbirds head to Elmwood Park, N.J., to take part in the fairleigh Dickinson Jamboree, Friday, October 28 to Sunday, October 30.
