Box Score VILLANOVA, Pa. - The LIU Brooklyn field hockey squad went on the road for a contest against Big East foe Villanova on Sunday afternoon. The Blackbirds fell to the Wildcats, 7-0, to drop to 0-7 in their inaugural season as an NCAA Division I varsity team.
Villanova was led by Molly Turner, who had two first-half goals to help the home team to a 4-0 lead at intermission. LIU Brooklyn had its best chance in the 30th minute, when Brianne Lynch had an attempt blocked by a Villanova defender. A penalty corner ensued, and was followed by a shot from freshman Casey Carrigan that went wide.
Three more goals by the Wildcats upped the margin to 7-0 before another penalty corner led to the Blackbirds' prime opportunity of the match. A penalty corner from Brooke McGinley produced a shot from classmate Jordan Laytos, but her shot was saved by a VU defender to help preserve the home team's shutout. Goalkeeper Molly Jannell recorded a career-high 12 saves in the match for LIU.
The Blackbirds return to action on Friday, Oct. 7 with their first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference contest at Bryant beginning at 7:00 p.m.
