BROOKLYN, N.Y. - LIU Brooklyn women's track & field senior
Eugenie Hue was named the Female Athlete of the Year and men's track & field junior
Kimorie Shearman were named the Male Athlete of the Year at LIU Brooklyn's 2019 Athletic Awards banquet Monday evening in the Steinberg Wellness Center. Seniors
Frank Cerillo of the baseball team and Hue, from track & field earned LIU's Scholar Athlete of the Year honors, while the baseball team earned the Blackbird Cup.
The Blackbird Cup is an award given every year as the culmination of a friendly competition among the LIU Brooklyn varsity student-athlete community. Individuals and teams can accumulate points based on five different categories: Academic Excellence, Athletic Accomplishments, Community Involvement, Social Media Presence and LIU Blackbird Unity. The LIU Brooklyn baseball team took home the award for the first time this year.
Hue has re-written the record books for women's track and field, and will graduate as a decorated runner at nearly every middle distance and distance event. A four-time NEC Indoor Athlete of the Week this year, she won NEC championships in both the 800 and the mile, and was named the meet's Most Outstanding Distance Performer. This past weekend at the outdoor championships, she won the 800 again, and was a part of the 4x400 relay that finished second. In that event, she clocked a personal best 52 second leg, which will hopefully qualify her for the NCAA regionals. Hue will graduate owning five program records, four of which were set this year, including the indoor 400, 500, and mile, and the outdoor 800. And this year, she matched her success on the track with success in the classroom, as she was named the NEC's Women's Indoor Track & Field Scholar Athlete of the Year.
Shearman was a crucial piece of the puzzle as the men's indoor track & field team rallied to come from behind and win their fifth Northeast Conference indoor team championship in the last five years. The junior was the team's leading point scorer, and crowned the NEC's fastest man indoors, as he dominated the field, winning championship titles in every single sprint event, including the 60, 200 and 400 meters. He was named the NEC's Most Outstanding Sprint Performer and the Meet's Most Valuable Performer.
