BROOKLYN, N.Y.- The LIU Brooklyn women's basketball team fell to the University of Maryland-Baltimore County Retrievers, 57-45, Wednesday evening at the Barclays Center. Senior
Shanovia Dove recorded a double-double, with 19 points and 10 rebounds, which tied her season-best. The Blackbirds dropped to 1-10 in the defeat.
Both teams struggled to score in the first half. Freshman
Aja Boyd, who finished with nine points, put LIU on the board with a three-point play, giving the home team a 3-1 advantage. The Retrievers scored the next four points berfore junior
Stylz Sanders made a layup to tie the score before the end of the first stanza.
The Blackbirds increased their lead to 8-5 after Dove knocked down a three-pointer early in the second quarter. With the score 8-7, Boyd made a layup and redshirt-sophomore
Drew Winter hit a jump shot to make it 12-7. UMBC outscored the Blackbirds 6-1 over the next span, to even the score at 13. Dove hit a pair of free throws late in the quarter to give LIU a 15-13 edge at the half.
LIU extended its lead back to five, with a three-pointer from freshman
Seneca Richards and a Dove layup, to go ahead 23-18. The visitors then went on a 12-0 rally, led by five points from Tyler Moore (19 points) and Laura Castaldo (15 points), to take a 30-23 lead. UMBC took a 35-30 advantage into the fourth and final quarter.
The Retrievers improved their lead to 38-30 after Moore hit a three to begin the final frame. The Blackbirds then cut the lead to 40-35 after Dove hit a triple. Trailing 42-37, Boyd converted a three-point play to make it a two-point game, 42-40. Following a basket by Taylor McCarley (16 points), Dove made her third three-pointer of the contest to cut the UMBC lead to 44-43. But the Retrievers would end the game on a 13-2 run to seal the victory.
The Blackbirds return to action Thursday, December 29 as they open Northeast Conference play against Mount St. Mary's at the Steinberg Wellness Center; tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
