STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The LIU Brooklyn track and field teams completed day one of the Northeast Conference Indoor Track Championships on Friday. With only four events completed so far, the men currently stand in sixth with 16 points and the women are tied for seventh with Fairleigh Dickinson, having accumulated eight points so far. Adam Walker-Khan won gold for the third consecutive year in the long jump.
The men claimed the top five qualifying times in the 60m dash. Tyler Cue, Delano Davis, Brendon Rodney, Caleb Wiliams and Tyquan Dukes have secured their spots in the final race on Saturday.
Mica-Jonathan Petit-Homme and Alistair McLean posted the top-two preliminary times in the men's 500m dash, with times of 1:04.27 and 1:04.94, respectively. Freshman Deshawne Bunion will also have his chance at the title tomorrow with his qualifying time of 1:07.88.
LIU will have five sprinters in the men's final for the 400m dash competing for the title. Karl Cajuste flew to the top of the standings with his time of 49.50 in his preliminary heat. Cajuste will be joined by teammates McLean, Bunion, Rodney and Tobias Nelson in the final race tomorrow.
Roderick Moodie, Cajuste and Petit-Homme have qualified for the 60m hurdles final race with Moodie having recorded the best time for the Blackbirds, finishing in 8.24.
Six LIU sprinters clinched the top spots in the 200m dash for the men and will all compete for the coveted title on Saturday. In his signature event, Rodney posted the best time in the event of 21.30 and will be the top seed tomorrow, followed by fellow Blackbirds Tyler Cue, Delano Davis, Caleb Williams, Karl Cajuste and Kyle Bennett.
In field action, Adam Walker-Khan had his first gold finish of the 2016 NEC Championships in the men's long jump, defending his title from last season and garnering 10 points for LIU with his 7.16m jump, which is a new season best for the junior. Delano Davis claimed bronze in the same event, jumping 7.02m.
The women's side, -Anise Cuffee won the 60m dash preliminaries with a time of 7.72. Cuffee will be joined by Cassandra Jones and Gabriella Ade-Onojobi, who recorded times of 7.80 and 7.74, respectively.
Ade-Onojobi, who ran 8.80, and Stevens, who clocked 9.10, are set to compete in the final 60m hurdles heat tomorrow, as Ade-Onojobi looks to defend her crown.
Three Blackbirds have advanced to tomorrow's final in the 400m dash for the women, including reigning champion Stephanie Aidoo, along with Elizabeth Adesanya and Alea Stevens.
In the 500m dash, Jones, Cayla Coleman and Cemorne Baugh will compete for the Blackbirds. Kharyn Ethridge will be the lone representative for LIU tomorrow in the race for the 800m run title.
Jones won the 200m dash preliminary, narrowly edging teammate Aidoo by 0.12 second with a time of 24.64. Also competing in the final tomorrow for the Blackbirds are Cuffee, Adesanya and Ade-Onojobi.
Teena Mobley finished fifth in the women's long jump, jumping 5.28m to make the top-five in the event. Christina Abiola threw 12.78m in the shot put to claim a top-five spot in the NEC women's field final on Friday.
