RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The LIU Brooklyn softball team will play its first contest of the season away from the states of Florida and California on Thursday afternoon at Manhattan. The contest, which will be played in Riverdale, N.Y., is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.
The Blackbirds posted a pair of wins at last weekend's University of South Florida Spring Break Tournament, shutting out 2015 NCAA Tournament participant Florida A&M, 1-0, and defeating Big Ten foe and another NCAA Tournament team from last year, Northwestern, 7-3. The victory was the second of the season for LIU Brooklyn over a team from the Big Ten (Illinois).
Senior Celinna Cosio led the offense last week, hitting an even .400 with six runs batted in. On the year, Cosio is batting .300 and is tied for second on the team in RBIs with 11. Senior Whitney West and junior Kylie Mulholland hit .316 and .313, respectively, while sophomore Victoria Zamora reached base an impressive 60.0 percent of the time she went to the plate.
In the circle, sophomore Erynn Sobieski earned both of LIU's wins on the weekend and finished with a 2.49 ERA in 19.2 innings pitched. Sobieski struck out eight batters against the Rattlers and also picked up the first complete-game shutout of her LIU Brooklyn career.
Manhattan enters the non-conference contest with a 9-7 record and went 2-2 at last weekend's St. John's Invitational in Jamaica, N.Y. The Jaspers defeated Howard and Fairleigh Dickinson, while losing two close contests to the host Red Storm and Samford. Elena Bowman, last season's MAAC Player of the Year, is hitting .409 on the season with four home runs and 10 RBIs.
