BROOKLYN, N.Y. - LIU Brooklyn sophomore catcher Victoria Zamora picked up the first NEC Softball Player of the Week award of her career, it was announced by the league on Monday. Zamora, who shares the award with Saint Francis U. utility player Alexis Bower, joins classmate Erynn Sobieski as Blackbirds that have won NEC weekly awards this season.
Last season's NEC Rookie of the Year recorded hits in all five of LIU Brooklyn's contests at the UCF Invitational this past weekend. Zamora drove in both of the Blackbirds' runs in a narrow 3-2 loss to South Dakota before singling and stealing a base against North Florida.
The following day, the Orange, Calif. native went 3-for-8 with a double, run batted in and run scored in a doubleheader split with La Salle and nationally-ranked UCF. On the final day of competition, Zamora led LIU's offense with three hits, an RBI and a run scored in a 7-2 win over Middle Tennessee.
In addition to her exploits offensively, Zamora continued to show off her defensive skills behind the plate as she threw out both runners attempting to steal on her in the tournament. For the season, Zamora has thrown out 11 of the 22 potential base stealers and also has compiled a team-best .404 batting average.
LIU Brooklyn continues its season on March 11-13 at the FAU Parents Weekend Tournament. The Blackbirds will face nationally-ranked Minnesota, UMass, Rutgers, Mercer and the host Owls.
