LORETTO, Pa. - The LIU Brooklyn women's lacrosse team fell to Saint Francis, 13-10 on Sunday afternoon. The Blackbirds are now 0-2 in Northeast Conference competition, and 4-8 overall on the season.
The captain trio of
Jenn Peters,
Mary McQueen and
Tori Shinkowitz each tallied hat tricks in the loss. Freshman
Becca Williams also found the back of the net in the second half to contribute to the Blackbirds offensive attack.
The Red Flash struck first, and went on a 3-0 run to begin the game. McQueen got the Blackbirds on the board with 23:17 on the clock, and Peters would follow to cut the deficit to 3-2.
Both teams would exchange goals for the rest of the first, and the Blackbirds would head into the half down, 6-4.
Saint Francis came out in the second half, scoring four unanswered goals to take a 10-4 lead.
But LIU would find a spark in the offense late in the game, to outscore SFU, 4-1, with just 3:15 left to play. But the run wasn't enough, as the Blackbirds fell to the Red Flash with a final of 13-10.
Freshman
Virginia Gibbons earned the start for the Blackbirds, posting three saves on seven goals against, in her 29:15 played. Senior
Alexis Maldonado came in relief and tallied two saves of her own on six goals against.
"This week we will get back to fundamentals and straight up hard work that we've been missing in some of our losses," head coach
Allison Hanley said. "Hopefully that will jump start our play the way we need it to."
LIU will return return home next weekend to host Mount St. Mary's on Friday, April 15 and Wagner on Sunday, April 17, continuing NEC play.
"We need to find consistency, and honestly we need to show that we want to win and that we deserve to win," head coach
Allison Hanley said. "We are looking forward to being back in Brooklyn and putting in work this week."
