BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The LIU Brooklyn women's lacrosse suffered a heartbreaking one-goal loss to Mount St. Mary's on Friday evening at LIU Field. The Blackbirds furious comeback would fall short, as it was the Mountaineers who put up a goal first in sudden-death overtime.
Mount St. Mary's took control of the game early, going on a 4-0 run in the first eight minutes of the matchup.
But
Jenn Peters would get the Blackbirds on the board at 21:38, and would lead the attack for LIU. The junior contributed a hat trick to the offensive efforts, while
Jayde Sains,
Tori Shinkowitz,
Carlie Robinson,
Kathryn Harvey and
Rorie Crum would all tally two goals apiece in the contest.
The Blackbirds would find the spark in their offense as halftime approached. Sains, Shinkowitz and Peters would turn the 6-1 deficit to 6-4 in just under five minutes. The Mountaineers and Blackbirds would trade off goals to head into the half, 7-5.
Mount St. Mary's would score the first goal of the second half, but LIU's Harvey, Peters, Shinkowitz and
Becca Williams would put four in a row on the board for the Blackbirds. The 4-0 run would tie the game 9-9.
The two teams would end up exchanging goals until the score was tied at 11, with 14:45 left in the game. Sains and Robinson would lift the Blackbirds to their first lead of the game, at a crucial 13-11.
With eight minutes to play, LIU kept a 14-12 lead. But Sammie Knapp and Kelly Maloney of Mount St. Mary's would score two straight to send the game into overtime at 14-14.
Emily Davis would pick up the draw control to begin the sudden-death overtime, and the Mountaineers would maintain possesion. Maloney would score after 54 seconds, with help from Knapp to send Mount St. Mary's to victory.
Freshman
Virginia Gibbons earned the start in between the pipes for the Blackbirds, stopping 11 of the Mountaineers' 15 shots.
Sierra O'Connor would also contirbute significantly to the team's efforts with five draw controls, the most she's tallied in a single game.
The Blackbirds continue their homestand, hosting Wagner on Sunday, April 17 on LIU Field at 11:00 a.m.
