PHILADELPHIA - The LIU Brooklyn softball team steps out of conference for a midweek contest at Saint Joseph's on Wednesday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. The contest begins a busy week for the Blackbirds that will see them play five games in a five-day span, culminating with a pair of home Northeast Conference doubleheaders against Robert Morris and Fairleigh Dickinson this weekend.
LIU most recently split a twinbill at Bryant on Sunday, April 10. Sophomore pitcher Erynn Sobieski was named NEC Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season after tossing 11.0 innings against the Bulldogs and allowing just a single earned run. Sobieski struck out 11 batters while walking none, and picked up a complete-game victory in game won of the doubleheader.
Saint Joseph's enters having won two of three in an Atlantic 10 series with UMass over the weekend. Overall, the Hawks hold a 14-15-1 record and are 3-5-1 in A10 play. Offensively, Amanda Kulp is the tablesetter for St. Joe's with a .414 batting average and 11 stolen bases. Kaylyn Zierke has a team-high six home runs and is hitting .340 on the year. The Hawks have three pitchers that share the duties in the circle, with Madison Clark leading the way with a 2.06 ERA.
Last season, the two teams met at LIU Field and the Blackbirds came away with a thrilling 11-9 victory. The two teams combined for 23 hits, which included the go-ahead RBI double from Victoria Zamora in the fifth inning. Ariana Lopez had three hits in the contest while Angie Vazquez went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs.
