BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The LIU Brooklyn women's lacrosse team fell to Wagner on Sunday afternoon, 15-9, to conclude a two-game conference homestand.
Jenn Peters led the scoring efforts for the Blackbirds, tallying four goals in the contest. This is the third game in a row that the junior has recorded at least a hat trick.
Freshman
Jayde Sains contributed to the Blackbirds goal total with a pair of her own. While
Carlie Robinson,
Rorie Crum and
Christina Zolezzi each found the back of the net once during the matchup.
It was Wagner who got on the board first, just under eight minutes into the contest. The Blackbirds would respond with a Peters' goal just over two muinutes later, and the teams would exchange goals until half way through the first half. With 18:16 on the clock, the Seahawks would go on a 3-0 run to take a 5-2 lead.
Sains would find the back of the net with help from Robinson to end the Wagner run, and cut the lead to 5-3. But the Seahawks commanding offense would score three more times to end the half, leaving the score at 8-3 during halftime.
LIU would be outscored by just one goal in the second half, continuing to trade off goals the rest of the way.
Zolezzi would get her first goal of the season under her belt, with 7:39 left to play, to make the score 15-8.
The team put up a fight until the final buzzer of the contest, scoring the final goal with 1:10 remaining.
Freshman
Virginia Gibbons earned the start in between the pipes, tallying three saves on 10 goals against. Senior
Alexis Maldonado would come in relief for almost 16 minutes during the game, before Gibbions would once again see action.
The Blackbirds dominanted in caused turnovers, tallying 12, while Wagner posted 4 in the matchup. LIU also led in ground balls with 18.
The Blackbirds fall to 4-10 overall and 0-3 in conference. The team will have the week off and continue Northeast Conference competition in Fairfield, Conn. on Friday, April 22 to take on Sacred Heart.
