FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The LIU Brooklyn women's lacrosse team dropped its matchup against Sacred Heart on Friday afternoon. The Blackbirds fell in their sole contest this weekend, 12-8, to the Pioneers.

Jenn Peters led the offensive efforts for the Blackbirds, scoring four goals in the contest. Kathryn Harvey, Jayde Sains and Jillian May also contributed to LIU's goal total against Sacred Heart's Paige Hammick in the cage.

Sacred Heart jumped out to an early lead, scoring the first six goals in 11:27. LIU responded with a 4-1 run to get within three, 7-4, with 5:21 to play in the half. Starting off the run was May with 16:56 on the clock.

But it was the Pioneers who went into halftime up, 8-4.

In the second half, after a Pioneer goal, the Blackbirds received goals from Harvey and Peters to cut the deficit to within two, 9-7, with 9:56 remaining.

Then Sacred Heart would go on a three-goal run of their own to get themselves back up by five, 12-7,

Freshman Virginia Gibbons earned the start for the Blackbirds posting three saves. Senior Alexis Maldonado came in as relief tallying 11 of her own in 48:33 played. 

The two Blackbird goalies led Sacred Heart, 14-8. LIU also led SHU in a defensive effort, leading in caused turnovers, 12-7.

The Blackbirds will close out the regular season next weekend on LIU Field. The team will face Bryant and Central Connecticut on Friday, April 29 and Sunday May 1.
