STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Fresh off four straight Northeast Conference wins over the weekend, the LIU Brooklyn softball team looks to extend its winning streak against Stony Brook on Wednesday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
The Blackbirds (17-24) picked up a pair of doubleheader sweeps of Robert Morris and Fairleigh Dickinson at LIU Field on Saturday and Sunday. LIU took 4-1 and 6-5 decisions over the Colonials, before earning 8-0 and 7-5 wins over the Knights the following day. Sophomore Erynn Sobieski picked up three victories in the circle in the four games, throwing 17.1 innings and allowing just three earned runs while striking out 14. For her efforts, Sobieski earned her third NEC Pitcher of the Week award this season.
Also earning weekly honors from the NEC was sophomore Victoria Zamora, who was named Player of the Week for the first time in her career. Zamora, who leads the Blackbirds in all major offensive categories including batting average (.378), home runs (5) and RBIs (20), hit .571 over five games last week and hit two home runs while driving in five. Zamora had two of the biggest hits of the first game against Robert Morris, connecting on a two-run home run and also driving home a run with a double in a 4-1 win.
Stony Brook (21-17-2) is coming off a comeback 8-7 victory over Hofstra on Tuesday. The Seawolves erased a five-run deficit to come away with the one-run win over the Pride. Diane Caruso went 2-for-2 with two RBIs in the contest and paces the club with seven home runs. Alexandra Piscotta is hitting a team-best .395 with five home runs and 28 runs batted in.
