SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The LIU Brooklyn baseball team played the first game of a doubleheader against Bryant Saturday afternoon, before inclement weather forced the two teams to postpone until Sunday. Bryant won the game, 5-1, and the two teams will play a doubleheader Sunday, April 3, at 1 p.m.
LIU jumped out to an early lead in the delayed game, as freshman
Luis Arias de los Santos had a lead-off home run to left field, putting the Blackbirds up for the first time this series, 1-0. But the Bulldogs answered in the bottom of the frame with a one-out homer of their own, knotting the score at 1-1.
Bryant would take the lead for good in the bottom of the third inning, when a run scored on an error. LIU threatened to score in the top of the sixth when freshman
Andy Camilo doubled and
Tommy Jakubowski was intentionally walked, but the Bulldogs were able to get the third out, and maintain the 2-1 difference.
Bryant would clinch the lead in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, a walk and a single put two runners on base, and a one-out home run cleared the bases, putting the Bulldogs up, 5-1. The home team would get three straight outs in the top of the seventh to confirm the win, as Bryant improves to 16-5 overall, 6-0 in NEC action, while LIU falls to 5-18, 0-6 in NEC play.
Senior
Brian Drapeau had the loss on the mound for LIU, falling to 0-4 on the season. Brandon Bingel had the complete game win for Bryant, pitching 7.0 innings and giving up just six hits and one run, while striking out eight.
Freshman
Luis Arias de los Santos had LIU's lone RBI, while freshman
Andy Camilo and junior
Tommy Jakubowski both had multi-hit games for the Blackbirds.
The two teams conclude the series Sunday afternoon, playing one seven and one nine inning game as a part of a doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
