DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The LIU Brooklyn men's golf team stands in sixth after the first day of the 2016 Northeast Conference Championship. The Blackbirds carded 298 for 10-over par during round one, just three strokes back from fifth place, which is occupied by Central Connecticut. Wagner College leads the tournament after the initial round of the championship, shooting 281 to close out day one at -7.
Rodrigo Munoz paced the Blackbirds through the first day, tied for 12th going into the second round of competition. The junior matched his best round in the spring season with a 73 on the par-72 course.
One stroke behind Munoz at +2 is sophomore Kyle Maihi, who is tied for 18th in a field of 45 golfers. Shooting 75 in his final first round at the NEC Championships is senior Stewart Gray. The Auckland native is tied for 23rd going into the second round after shooting par or better on 13 holes on day one.
Tied for 25th at the conclusion of round one is freshman Daniel Reale, who stands one shot back from Gray at 76. Rounding out the Blackbirds is freshman George Helsby, who carded 83 on day one and will go into the second round of play in 41st.
