BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The LIU Brooklyn softball team puts its 10-game winning streak on the line with a pair of Northeast Conference doubleheaders this weekend. The Blackbirds will host Sacred Heart on Saturday, April 30 beginning at 1:00 p.m., before taking the short trip to Wagner for two games that are scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m.
Prior to the contest on Saturday, a brief senior day ceremony will be held for the five Blackbirds playing in their final regular-season doubleheader at LIU Field: Ashley Sandoval-Colon, Celinna Cosio, Alyssa Gospodarek, Ariana Lopez, and Whitney West.
This past Wednesday, LIU rallied to defeat Big Ten foe Rutgers, 4-3, in eight innings to move its win streak to double figures. Junior Kayla Gloady was the hitting hero, coming through with the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the eighth. It was the second game-winner of the year for Gloady, who also sent the Blackbirds to a walk-off win against Robert Morris on April 16.
For the season, sophomore Victoria Zamora is batting a team-high .375 and scored the game-winning run against the Scarlet Knights to push her total on the year to a squad-best 30. Senior Whitney West has nine hits in her last 15 at bats (.600) and has scored seven times in the last four games at the top of the lineup. Classmate Celinna Cosio is also swinging a hot bat, with six extra-best hits (three doubles, three home runs) over the past four games.
In the circle, sophomore Erynn Sobieski pitched three scoreless innings against Rutgers to pick up the win in relief, boosting her win total to 15 on the year, the most in the NEC this season. Against NEC foes, the trio of Sobieski, freshman Tallie Woodson and junior Shelley Procter have compiled a 1.71 ERA and struck out 60 batters while allowing just 14 walks.
Sacred Heart enters with a 13-31-1 record and is 3-9 record in NEC play. The Pioneers most recently dropped a close 1-0 decision to Quinnipiac on Thursday. Junior Jamie Carlson struck out five in three innings of work, and on the season has struck out 131 batters in 118.2 innings pitched while garnering a 2.66 ERA. Freshman Emily Orosco has a team-best 2.19 ERA and pitched a complete-game shutout in a victory over Bryant earlier this season.
The Seahawks of Wagner are 3-7 in league contests and hold an 18-23 record overall. McKaleigh Goodale is the top pitcher for WC, with an 8-9 record and a 2.72 ERA. Offensively, Karen Prihoda is hitting .315 to pace the team while Hana Gilbert has posted a team-high 26 RBIs. Wagner is coming off a sweep of Sacred Heart last weekend, as Prihoda doubled home the game-winning run in the first game while Jessica Carlucci hit a two-run home run to break a 2-2 tie and propel the Seahawks to a 4-2 win in the second game of the day.
