SMITHFIELD, R.I. - The LIU Brooklyn softball team will make the trip to Rhode Island this weekend to square off against Bryant in a Northeast Conference doubleheader on Sunday. First pitch of the twinbill is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
The Blackbirds (12-22, 1-1 NEC) split a doubleheader with NEC foe Saint Francis U. last weekend, earning a 5-1 victory in the first game before dropping a 6-0 decision in game two. Sophomore Erynn Sobieski struck out eight Red Flash batters and limited the opponents to one run on four hits in a complete-game victory. Sophomore Victoria Zamora hit a pair of solo home runs and classmate Angie Vazquez also went deep in the victory.
For the year, Zamora leads LIU and ranks in the NEC's top five in batting average at .359. Senior Whitney West is right behind her teammate at .357, and paces the team and the league in triples with four. Senior Ariana Lopez is the team's leading run producer with 18 RBIs and has added three home runs which is tied for the team lead with Zamora.
Bryant (2-24, 1-1 NEC) also split its first conference doubleheader, posting a 1-0 win over Sacred Heart while falling by the same score in the nightcap of a doubleheader last weekend. Senior Elle Madsen tossed a complete-game three-hitter to help the Bulldogs to the victory, and also doubled and scored the game's lone run offensively. Madsen has a team-high 19 hits on the year and has pitched 52.0 innings while maintaining a team-best 4.30 ERA in the circle.
