MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. - The LIU Brooklyn women's lacrosse fell to Robert Morris on Friday evening to open Northeast Coference play. The Blackbirds fell to the Colonials, 13-9 in their first of a two-game road trip.The first contest of league play for both teams, junior Mary McQueen led the offensive attack for LIU, registering four goals in 60 minutes. While classmate Jenn Peters tallied a pair of goals for LIU in the matchup.It was a back-and-forth battle between the Blackbirds and Colonials, exchanging goals in the first seven minutes.
McQueen netted the first two goals for the team, earning the Blackbirds' their sole lead of the day, and then keeping the game knotted 2-2 in the first half.
After a Robert Morris goal, LIU tied the game 3-3 on a man up goal by
Tori Shinkowitz. Odd-man situations would be the theme of the first half with a total of six yellow cards issued to both teams.
The Blackbirds went into the half down 7-4 after a
Jayde Sains' goal with 5:32 on the clock.
Carlie Robinson, Peters and McQueen would contribute to the goal total in the second half. While the Blackbirds brought the offensive pressure in the final four minutes, the Colonials defense fought off the attack in front of the net.
Freshman
Virginia Gibbons put a solid effort in between the pipes, posting 12 saves on the Colonials 25 shots on goal.
The Blackbirds will continue their western Pennsylvania conference swing on Sunday, April 10 to take on their second NEC opponent Saint Francis U.
