BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The LIU Brooklyn softball team earned the right to play the upcoming 2016 Northeast Conference Tournament at LIU Field, beginning on Thursday, May 12. The top-seeded Blackbirds won their 11th regular-season title by virtue of a 14-2 record against league teams, and finished the regular season with a 27-24 record overall. EXTRA BASES
•The regular-season crown was the first for LIU since 2010, and the Blackbirds will host the NEC Tournament at LIU Field for the first time since 2008 (hosted in 2009 at St. John's and in 2010 at Fairleigh Dickinson due to graduation being held on campus).
•The NEC Tournament appearance will be the 29th in program history for LIU.
•The Blackbirds enter the tournament on a 14-game winning streak, the longest streak by any NEC team this season and the longest for any NEC team since LIU Brooklyn reeled off a school-record tying 18 straight in 2007.
•Over that stretch, LIU has outscored its opponents by an impressive 96-24 margin and has averaged 6.8 runs and 8.6 hits per contest.
•LIU Brooklyn's roster is comprised of five seniors, five juniors, three sophomores and six freshmen. Ten of the 19 members of the team hail from California, including four of the five seniors.
•Head coach Roy Kortmann is in his 21st season at the helm of the LIU Brooklyn softball program, and won the 600th game of his career earlier this season at Mount St. Mary's.
•Kortmann has been named NEC Coach of the Year seven times and assistant coach Bill Gehrke was a member of the Northeast Conference's Coaching Staff of the Year in 2010.
•This marks the 10th time the NEC Tournament has been held in Brooklyn. The Blackbirds are 31-4 in those tournaments (1987-90, 2000-01, 2003-04, 2008).
