BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Senior Whitney West was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Northeast Region Second Team, leading three LIU Brooklyn softball players that earned recognition from the organization on Wednesday. Sophomore Erynn Sobieski and senior Celinna Cosio each garnered spots on the third team.
After earning a spot on the All-Northeast Conference First Team for her play during the regular season, West was named to the NEC All-Tournament team last weekend as she helped the Blackbirds to their 14th NEC crown. The program's career leader in hits with 242, West hit .385 over four games in the tournament and enters NCAA Regionals with a team-best .372 batting average. The all-region nod is the first of West's career.
The NEC Pitcher of the Year this season, Sobieski also shone brightly during the NEC Tournament, picking up two victories and a save to earn MVP honors at the event. On the year, the right-hander has won 19 games and ranks in the single-season top 10 in both innings pitched (213.2) and strikeouts (145).
Cosio was named the NEC Player of the Year after setting career highs in nearly all major offensive categories during her senior year. The San Diego, Calif. product hit a robust .500 in regular-season conference play and leads the team in both home runs (8) and RBIs (39).
LIU Brooklyn (30-25) will take on No. 10 LSU in its first game of the Baton Rouge regional on Friday, May 20. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET and can be seen on ESPN3.
