EUGENE, Ore. - LIU Brooklyn men's track and field standouts Mica-Jonathan Petit-Homme and Brendon Rodney each advanced to the finals of their respective events on the first day of the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Wednesday. Both Blackbirds moved beyond the semifinal round for the first time in their careers and have secured First Team All-America status.
Leading off LIU's contingent at nationals was the 4x100-meter relay team of Rodney, senior Tyquan Dukes, junior Delano Davis and freshman Caleb Williams. Running out of the eighth lane in the second heat of the event, the Blackbirds finished fifth with a time of 39.56 and closed in 12th overall to earn Second Team All-America accolades.
Following the relay, Petit-Homme took the stage in the second heat of the 400-meter hurdles. Seeded 11th heading into the meet, the Port-Au-Prince, Haiti native won his heat with a time of 50.49 to earn an automatic qualifier into finals. The appearance is the first in four attempts for Petit-Homme, who has been named Second Team All-American on two separate occasions.
Rounding out the evening was Rodney's 200-meter sprint, which came in the third and final heat. The Canadian-born graduate student finished in a time of 20.40, closing in second place behind Tennessee's Christian Coleman but still good enough to earn an automatic qualifying spot into the final. The time was the fourth-fastest of the semifinal round behind Coleman, LSU's Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake and Arkansas senior Jarrion Lawson.
Petit-Homme and Rodney will round out their LIU Brooklyn careers and will vie for a national title in their events on Friday, June 10. The 400-meter hurdles are scheduled for 9:57 p.m. ET, while the 200-meter dash will take place immediately following the hurdles. Both races, along with the rest of the final day of the men's national competition, can be seen on ESPN.
