RIO DE JANEIRO - LIU Brooklyn track & field alum
Brendon Rodney begins competition at the 2016 Summer Olympics on Tuesday, August 16 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Rodney, who is making his first career Olympic appearance, will race as an individual in the 200-meter dash and will be a part of the 4x100-meter relay with his Canadian teammates. Coverage of Olympic track & field action will be available on NBC Network, NBC Sports Network and online at
NBCOlympics.com.
A two-time First Team All-American during the 2015-16 collegiate season, Rodney garnered international attention after running a career-best 19.96 to win his second Canadian National Championship in the 200-meter dash in Edmonton, Alberta on July 11. The time is the 10th-fastest in the world in 2016 and ranks him seventh in the event heading into the first round of Olympic competition on Tuesday.
Rodney will also be a key component on Canada's 4x100-meter relay team, which figures to be in contention for a medal in Rio. In early April, the Brampton, Ontario native was a part of a relay that compiled a time of 38.11, which currently ranks as the third-fastest in the world. Rodney was the third leg of Canada's 4x100-meter relay team that won a bronze medal at last year's IAAF World Championships in Beijing, China.
One of the top athletes in LIU Brooklyn history, Rodney was named USTFCCCA Regional Track Athlete of the Year three times during his career including both indoor and outdoor awards during the 2015-16 season. The LIU Brooklyn school-record holder in both the indoor and outdoor 200-meter, the indoor 400-meter and the outdoor 100-meter dashes, Rodney was the Northeast Conference Most Valuable Performer at each of the last three NEC Outdoor Championships.
This past year, he finished fourth at NCAA Indoor Championships in the 200-meter dash and third at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, while helping the LIU 4x100-meter relay team to a 12th-place finish nationally.
