LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Sophomore
Simen Hestnes recorded the first goal of the season for the LIU Brooklyn men's soccer team, tying the contest against Siena at 1-1 in the 15th minute. But the Saints scored three unanswered goals, including a pair of penalty kicks, to come away with a 4-1 victory on Friday afternoon. The loss snapped the Blackbirds' 13-match unbeaten streak that had been carried over from the end of last season.
Milorad Sorbot scored on a header goal in the eighth minute to give Siena an early 1-0 lead, before Hestnes, a first team All-Northeast Conference selection last year, scored off a set piece taken by classmate
Rasmus Hansen to knot the contest. The tie was shortlived, however, as Alexander Tejera converted on a penalty opportunity in the 22nd minute to put the home team back in front, 2-1.
In the 31st minute, Hansen had the next chance for LIU Brooklyn but missed wide and less than five minutes later, Hansen, the reigning NEC Rookie of the Year, took a corner kick but the Blackbirds could not get a shot off. The match moved to halftime with each team having recorded four shots.
Hestnes had a shot to tie the game once again in the 53rd minute but was denied by Siena goalkeeper Aleks Radosavljevic. The Blackbirds had another corner kick in the 59th minute, but the ensuing shot from Hansen went wide. In the 66th minute, another penalty kick was awarded to Siena and Tejera once again came through to bump the Saints lead to 3-1. Matt Crisafulli closed out the scoring with a tally in the 85th minute.
LIU Brooklyn continues its weekend road trip on Sunday, Aug. 28 against Army. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
