WEST POINT, N.Y. - Freshman
Giuseppe Barone broke a 2-2 deadlock with the first goal of his collegiate career in the 69th minute to lift the LIU Brooklyn men's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over Army West Point on Sunday afternoon. The Blackbirds, who jumped out to a 2-0 lead before the Black Knights rallied to knot the contest, improved to 1-1 on the early year while Army drops to 1-1.
LIU got out to an early 1-0 lead in the first five minutes of the match as junior
Naeem Charles converted on his first goal of the season off a feed from sophomore
Romario Guscott. The margin remained the same going into intermission, with Army holding a slim 5-3 edge in shots.
Less than 10 minutes into the second half, the Blackbirds boosted their cushion to 2-0 as reigning NEC Rookie of the Year
Rasmus Hansen one-timed a through ball from classmate
Simen Hestnes for his first goal of 2016. Sophomore Filip Nordstrom was also credited with an assist for beginning the scoring sequence.
Army came back with consecutive goals in the 65th and 68th minutes to tie the score. But Barone came right back with the go-ahead score just 1:46 following the equalizer, as he took a pass from Charles and finished past the Black Knights goalkeeper.
From there, senior
Logan Keys and the LIU Brooklyn defense kept Army off the board to secure the win. Keys registered four saves over the full 90 minutes to pick up his first victory this season.
