DAVIDSON, N.C. - LIU Brooklyn will officially add field hockey as an active varsity sport program on Saturday, Sept. 3, as the Blackbirds will take on Davidson for the first game in program history. The Blackbirds conclude their trip to North Carolina the following day with a neutral-site contest against Appalachian State that will be played at Belk Turf Field.
LIU became the seventh field hockey team to join the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in February 2015, and has since built a team consisting of 19 freshmen that will compete in their first collegiate season in 2016. Nine states are represented on the roster, including six student-athletes from the state of Pennsylvania and four from New Jersey. Student-athletes from California, Delaware, Massachusetts, Maryland, New York, Ohio and Virginia also dot the roster.
Under the direction of head coach Pat Kennedy, the youthful Blackbirds will take on a Davidson team that enters the weekend with an 0-2 record. The Wildcats dropped a 3-1 decision to Georgetown before suffering a 2-1, overtime loss to Ball State. Anne Federico has a goal and an assist on the young season for Davidson.
On Sunday, LIU Brooklyn faces Appalachian State, who is also 0-2 this season. Facing the same opponents as Davidson, the Mountaineers lost 3-1 to Ball State and 4-3 to Georgetown. Four different players have scored goals for App State, including Taylor Cimbalist who also has an assist.
