Rasmus Hansen had three assists to help the LIU Brooklyn men's soccer team to its third straight win, a 4-0 shutout of Saint Peter's on Friday evening at LIU Field. The Blackbirds improve to 5-2-1 on the season while the Peacocks fall to 1-5-2.
LIU dominated from the start, and had a prime chance early in the first half. Sophomore Filip Nordstrom had a quality opportunity in the seventh minute as he slid a shot from the right side that hit the post and caromed out of play.
In the 23rd minute, the Blackbirds broke through as freshman
Marius Koss started the goal-scoring play with a pass out wide to Hansen. The Greve, Denmark product took a dribble and delivered a cross right on the foot of Charles, who cashed in on the doorstep to put the home team in front, 1-0.
Sophomore
Simen Hestnes nearly gave LIU Brooklyn a two-goal lead but hit the crossbar on his chance in the 30th minute. The Blackbirds entered intermission with a slim 1-0 lead and led the shot battle, 7-4.
The second half saw the Blackbirds unleash an attacking offense that produced three scores, all of high quality. The first came off a corner kick in the 57th minute that was sent into the middle of the box by Hansen. The pass found sophomore defender
Erik Wahlin, who neatly redirected the ball into the upper-right corner of goal to register his third goal of the season and double LIU's lead.
Hestnes finally broke through in the 65th minute when he pounced on a loose ball off a cross from Hansen that was deflected by the Saint Peter's goalkeeper and drilled a shot into the back of the net to put the score at 3-0.
Freshman
Giuseppe Barone was dangerous as a substitute all evening long and had a number of chances on goal, his best of which came in the 70th minute when he hit the post with a shot off a beautiful through ball. Charles concluded the scoring in the 79th minute on a great individual play at the top of the box. Barone sent a looping pass to Charles, who split two defenders and converted to boost the advantage to an insurmountable range.
Senior goalkeeper
Logan Keys had three saves registered his first shutout of the season, and did so after a brilliant save from point-blank range in the 86th minute that kept the Peacocks from scoring.
LIU Brooklyn hits the road for a match against defending regular season America East champion Albany on Sunday, Sept. 25, beginning at 4:00 p.m.
