Box Score DAVIDSON, N.C. - Freshman Skai Sprenkle registered the first goal in the history of the LIU Brooklyn field hockey program in the Blackbirds' first ever game at Davidson on Saturday. LIU saw the Wildcats score the first five goals of the contest and dropped an 8-1 decision.
In the opening 35 minutes, freshman goalkeeper Shelly Drucker denied Davidson's first shot six minutes in, but the Wildcats were able to jump on top on a rebound opportunity at the 9:07 mark. Five minutes later, Anne Federico scored to put the score at 2-0.
The lead for the home team jumped to 3-0 before the Blackbirds registered their first shot, as freshman Casey Carrigan had a chance but was stopped by Bean Rodriguez with less than a minute before halftime.
Davidson tallied two more goals to begin the second stanza, preceding the goal by Sprenkle who beat the goalkeeper from six yards out to pull LIU to within 5-1. Freshman Jordan Laytos continued momentum for the Blackbirds a few minutes later, but had her shot stopped by Davidson's Sarah Zeszotarski.
From there, the Wildcats scored three more times to account for the final margin of victory. Drucker played the full 70 minutes and accounted for four saves, as the Blackbirds played 17 freshmen in the game.
LIU Brooklyn continues its road trip on Sunday, Sept. 4 against Appalachian State. The game is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
