MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The LIU Brooklyn women's basketball team lost their third-straight game Monday night, falling to the Robert Morris Colonials in the Sewall Center, 83-42. LIU struggled with shooting in the game, hitting just 19.6 percent from the field, but it was a strong first quarter by RMU that would prove to be the difference in the game.
Robert Morris started the game on a 15-0 run, sparked by guard Anna Nikki Stamolamprou, who scored eight of the team's early points. The senior, who shot 68 percent from the field all night and 60 percent from long range, finished with a career-high and RMU single-game record 39 points, along with nine rebounds to lead all players in both categories. RMU finished the first quarter with a 23-3 lead.
RMU would continue to widen the lead in the second quarter, eventually going up, 37-9. But the Blackbirds started to find their shot in towards the end of the stanza. With just under three minutes to play in the half, LIU's defense held Robert Morris scoreless for two minutes, while forcing three Colonial turnovers. Freshman
Seneca Richards hit a three at 2:53 to spark a 10-0 run by the Blackbirds. Senior
Brianna Farris would make two free throws and a layup in the span, that helped LIU close the gap to 37-19.
Coming out of the half, however, the home team went on a streak again, outscoring LIU 17-3, and widening the gulf to 34 points, 56-22 with 3:42 to play. Another 13-0 run by the Colonials in the fourth quarter would give them their widest lead of the day, 78-32 at the 4:26 mark.
Over the final four minutes of play, the Blackbirds would go 8-for-14 from the free throw line, including four makes for both freshman
Victoria Powell and junior
DeAngelique Waithe, but it wasn't enough to close the gap, and Robert Morris took the win, 83-42.
Freshman
