NEW BRITAIN, CONN. - Sophomore
Christoffer Bjarre Solbakken scored a goal with just two minutes left in the second overtime period to propel the LIU Brooklyn men's soccer team to a 3-2 win over Northeast Conference foe Central Connecticut State Friday evening. With the win, LIU moves to 3-6-2 overall, and 2-0 in NEC action.
The first 30 minutes of the game were scoreless, until the home Blue Devils got on the board in the 32
nd minute to go up, 1-0. LIU's
Naeem Charles would even the game at one all when he scored in the 57
th minute. The senior would score on a curving strike off a free kick 18 yards out, making it 1-1, where the score would stay until the halftime break.
CCSU would retake the lead in the second half, scoring off a free kick to make it 2-1. But junior
Rasmus Hansen would score in the final minutes of action to force the game into extra periods. After a shot from
Filip Nordström hit the post, CCSU was called for a foul in the box in the 87
th minute. Hansen would take the penalty kick, and made it, tying the game up, 2-2 with just two minutes left to play, and forcing the extra time.
After a scoreless first overtime period, Solbakken would come through for the Blackbirds as the clock ran down. After three corner kicks in the second overtime period, Nordstrom would take one with just over two minutes left to play. His kick arched in front of the net, where an open Solbakken was waiting to head the ball into the far low corner, giving LIU the golden goal, and the 2-1 double OT win.
