BROOKLYN, N.Y. – In their final game of the regular season, the LIU Brooklyn field hockey team went to double overtime and then a penalty shootout with Davidson College. The Wildcats outshot LIU, 3-2 in the penalty, taking a 1-0 win in a final rainy game on LIU Field.

Davidson would put pressure on LIU in the first half, but the Blackbirds were able to block shots, or sophomore goalie Molly Jannell saved them. Jannell had back to back saves on a flurry in front of the net in the 25th minute, keeping the Wildcats scoreless. Sophomore Haley Ballard also had her first of two defensive saves in the first half, and at the break, it was 0-0.

Davidson would keep the pressure on in the second half, but Jannell and the LIU defense managed to keep the visitors from scoring. Ballard would register another defensive save for the Blackbirds, and Jannell remained strong in net. The Blackbirds had chances on net, but were not able to score either, and the two teams ended the regulation period knotted up, 0-0.

Both overtime periods followed the same pattern as regulation, with neither team able to find the back of the net as the rain intensified. The Wildcats would out-shoot LIU, 25-8 in the four periods. Jannell finished with 14 saves on the day, while Ballard had two defensive saves.

Still tied at the end of double overtime, the two teams went to penalty shootout. Sophomores Madi Cook and Brooke McGinley both made shots for LIU, while Jannell made two saves against Davidson's shooters. Tied 2-2, the game came down to the final Wildcat shooter. Nellie Dav Turnage was able to get the ball past Jannell, clinching the win for her team, 3-2 in the shootout, and 1-0 overall.

With the loss, LIU finishes the regular season with a 4-13 overall record. The Blackbirds will be the No.2 seed heading into next weekend's Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship. LIU will take on the No. 3 seed Fairfield in the semifinals on Friday, Nov. 3, with the tournament being hosted by top seed Monmouth.
