NFHCA Release
BROOKYLN, N.Y. - LIU Brooklyn field hockey sophomore Molly Jannell was named the Longstreth/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division I Defensive Player of the Week, it was announced by the NFCHA Wednesday afternoon. It is the first national honor for the LIU field hockey program, and the first in Jannell's career.
Jannell had an outstanding week with 25 saves and no goals allowed in two games. Her 13-save performance in a 1-0 win over Sacred Heart on Friday lifted LIU Brooklyn to a berth in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Tournament in just the second season for the program. Jannell followed it up with 12 saves against Davidson on Sunday to help LIU Brooklyn play to a scoreless tie before falling in penalty strokes.
She was also named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for her performance.
Jannell and the Blackbirds head to Monmouth this weekend to take part in the 2017 MAAC Championship Tournament. No. 2 seed LIU will take on No. 3 seed Fairfield, Friday, November 3 at 11 a.m.
