BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The No. 2-seeded LIU Brooklyn men's soccer team made a statement Friday afternoon in Brooklyn Bridge Park, beating No.3 seed Fairleigh Dickinson by an emphatic 4-0 in the semifinals, to advance to the 2017 Northeast Conference Championship game.  LIU will play for the title Sunday, November 12 at 1 p.m.

The four goals scored are a season-high scoring tally for the Blackbirds, and it was also the most goals netted against the Knights this season. NEC Player of the Year junior Rasmus Hansen had two goals for LIU, while both junior Erik Wahlin and freshman Daniel Quiros Herrero scored for the first time this season in the win. Filip Nordstrom, Naeem Charles and Ahmad Elfaham all had assists for LIU in the win.

The Blackbirds didn't wait to make their statement Friday, getting on the board early despite cold conditions. Filip Norstrom took a corner kick just under six minutes into the game, and passed it right in the box where Erik Wahlin was waiting. Wahlin settled the ball and put it in the net from about 10 yards out to give LIU the 1-0 lead.

Hansen made it 2-0 just over 20 minutes later, off a pass from Charles. Charles set him up with a lead pass right down the middle of the box, and Hansen tapped it past the goalie to make it a two goal difference.

LIU would ice the win in the 77th minute, when freshman Daniel Quiros Herrero scored his first collegiate goal. With two touches 25 yards out, he blasted the ball over the head of FDU's keeper and into the net, and the Blackbirds led, 3-0.

The final goal of the game came with just over seven minutes to play. Hansen would score off a beautiful cross from junior Ahmad Elfaham, clinching LIU's 4-0 win and a spot in the NEC Championship game.

The Blackbirds faced 11 shots in the contest. Freshman keeper Anthony Sciola had his third shutout of the season, making four saves to keep the Knights scoreless.

The No. 2 seeded Blackbirds will take part in the 2017 Northeast Conference championship game, taking place Sunday, November 12 at 1 p.m. LIU will take on top-seeded St. Francis Brooklyn, who defeated No. 4 seed Robert Morris 3-0 in the second semifinal game.
