PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The LIU Brooklyn women's swim team competed in five of the seven events scheduled on the first day at the Frank Elm Invitational at Rutgers University on Friday. The three-day championship format meet is proving to be a test for the young team.
Junior Briana Vega, who swam her season best in the 50 freestyle preliminaries in the morning session with a 23:59 (7th place) was the lone LIU swimmer to qualify for an 'A' final. She improved upon that in the night session, finishing fifth overall with a NEC best 23:45.
Freshman Jeanne Touchette-McGowan also improved in the 200 individual medley on her season best time. She qualified for the 200 IM in the first session for the 'C' final with a 2:08.12 and came second place in her race in a personal best 2:07.33.
Sophomore Noemie Lacroix-Moreau was the Blackbirds sole entry in the 500 freestyle (5:15.20). Four freshmen, led by Addison Donahue (25.55), swam the 50 freestyle prelims.
With junior Mads Carrigan swimming leadoff, LIU's top 200 free relay team came in at 1:43.36. In the final event of the night, the 400 medley relay, Touchette-McGowan, junior captain Milly Furneaux, Lacroix-Moreau and Vega, swimming the anchor leg, finished in 3:51.76, good for 13th place overall.
The Frank Elm Invitational is a three-day championship format meet with preliminaries in the morning session each day and a final in the same event that evening. The field of schools includes: Rutgers, LIU Post, Liberty, Columbia, James Madison, Navy, Central Connecticut State, Wagner and Northeastern. The first event is slated for 9:30 a.m. tomorrow and Sunday.
