FRESNO, CALIF. – The LIU Brooklyn women's lacrosse team scored 10 first half goals Friday afternoon in their season opener at Fresno State, but the Bulldogs came surging back in the second half, scoring 11 goals to take the win from the Blackbirds, 15-12.
Senior
Mary McQueen led LIU with four goals and an assists, while redshirt senior
Jillian May, freshman
Bianca Santucci and junior
Sierra O'Connor each had two goals in the loss. Sophomore
Kathryn Harvey added a goal and an assist, while classmate
Rorie Crum had one goal as well.
The Bulldogs went up early in the game, taking a 1-0 lead six minutes into the game. Harvey would even the score up 90 seconds later, off a pass from senior
Jenn Peters, to make it 1-1. The home team would score twice more and take a 3-1 lead before LIU's scoring spree began.
The Blackbirds scored three straight goals over the next three minutes, including shots from McQueen, May and O'Connor, to put LIU up, 4-3. Fresno State would tie it up with a goal not long after, but the Blackbirds ended the half scoring five unanswered goals.
Freshman
Bianca Santucci had a goal just before the 20-minute mark, off a pass from
Christina Zolezzi, and Crum had an unassisted shot five minutes later that made it 6-4. McQueen had two goals back-to-back for the hat trick, while Santucci added her second with just two minutes left to play in the half, and May made it 10-4 at the break with her last-second unassisted shot.
The second half, however, saw the Bulldogs score 11 unanswered goals, taking the lead, 15-10. The Blackbirds would score two late goals from O'Connor and McQueen, but it wouldn't be enough, and the home team took the win, 15-12.
