THIBODEAUX, La. – The LIU Brooklyn baseball team fell to Nicholls on the first day of the Mardi Gras Invitational Friday night, 3-0. The two pitching staffs combined on the mount to hold each team to just six hits apiece over nine innings.

Sophomore Anthony Rupp (0-2) got the loss on the mound, pitching 5.2 innings and striking out four. The Blackbird would hold Nicholls to just two earned runs on four hits. William Jackson III and Matt Ornstein combined on the mound for the final 2.1 innings of work; Jackson held Nicholls to just two hits and one run with two strikeouts in 1.1 innings, while Ornstein pitched a hitless inning of work to close the game.

Cole Stapler (1-1) had the win on the mound, as he pitched 8.0 innings, holding LIU to no runs on six hits, with five strikeouts. Kyle Craft had the save for the home team, striking out three straight batters in 1.0 inning of work.

Senior Charles Misiano had a lead-off walk for LIU to start the game, but the Colonels would get a double play to end the inning. Nicholls would get on the board for the first time in the bottom of the frame. A one out walk put a runner on for the home team, and he advanced to third on a wild pitch and a balk. An LIU error would put the next runner on the base, and bring home the first run of the day, 1-0. Rupp would get the final two outs of the inning with just two pitches, and LIU settled in from there.

In the top of the second, the Blackbirds loaded the bases with two outs, but couldn't convert. Harrison Preschel, Dom Paiotti and freshman Joe Curcio each had singles to put Blackbirds on the bags, but Nicholls got the final out, and escaped the inning with no LIU run scored.

Nicholls wouldn't score again until the sixth inning, when a home run to right field put the Colonels up, 2-0. Jackson came in to relieve Rupp with two outs, and was able to retire the side before more damage was done.

An RBI double in the bottom of the seventh added the final tally for the day, and LIU moved to 0-4 on the season, while Nicholls improved to 3-3.

Up next, the Blackbirds take on Southern University, Saturday, February 25 at 8 p.m.
