EMMITSBURG, Md. --- Despite a solid showing by senior
Shanovia Dove, the LIU Brooklyn women's basketball team could not capitalize on its early momentum, falling to Mount St. Mary's on the road, 56-43, Saturday afternoon at Knott Arena.
Shanovia Dove netted a game-high 20 points on 5-of-17 shooting, marking the 18th time in 28 games that the Palm Beach, Fla. native has paced the Blackbirds (5-23, 4-13 NEC) in scoring. Graduate student
Dionne Coe added eight points and freshman
Gabrielle Caponegro nearly notched a double-double with seven points and ten rebounds.
LIU opened the game with an 8-0 run before Mount St. Mary's (12-16, 10-7 NEC) was able to score their first points at the 6:28 mark. The Mount went on a mini-run of their own afterwards, outscoring LIU 9-3 in less than three minutes to pull within two (11-9) with 3:52 to go in the period. A 7-1 burst from Dove and freshman
Aja Boyd helped the Blackbirds end the quarter with an eight point lead, 18-10.
The second quarter was more closely contested than the first but LIU still managed to extend its lead to 31-22 - its largest of the afternoon - on a Dove three pointer with 2:41 left in the half.
However, the game took an unlucky turn for the Blackbirds as the second half began. While LIU tried to work through a cold shooting streak, the Mount took the lead for the first time all game during a seven minute, 14-0 run that left the home team with a five point edge (36-31). A deep three-pointer from Coe that just beat the shot clock would get LIU back within one point (38-37) with 1:16 remaining in the third.
LIU tried to regain their lead after that Coe shot but the Mountaineers would push their lead to five (42-37) after three quarters and hold the Blackbirds to a second straight six-point quarter to secure the win.
The Mount had three players score in double figures, led by the double double of Mikal Johnson (14 points, 10 rebounds).
OTHER NOTES: LIU split the season series with Mount St. Mary's, with each team winning on the road...Dove and Caponegro led the Blackbirds in points and rebounds in the same game for the second straight game and fourth time overall.
