BROOKLYN, N.Y. --- The LIU Brooklyn softball team opened its two-day home mini-tournament Saturday with back-to-back games against fellow participants Princeton and Binghamton.

The Blackbirds were defeated in both contests, losing in extra innings to Princeton (12-10 in 8 innings) and falling to Binghamton 8-1.

GAME 1: LIU 10, PRINCETON 12 (F/8)
Junior Victoria Zamora wasted no time kicking off the action in the first inning for LIU.The left fielder hit a leadoff, first pitch home run in the top of the first to give LIU a quick 1-0 advantage.

Zamora's score set off an offensive chain reaction among both teams, with at least one run being scored from the bottom of the first until the sixth inning.

Princeton matched LIU with a solo home run of its own in the second and added an RBI double to take a 2-1 lead. Zamora came through again in the bottom of the inning with a RBI single past second base to tie the game once again. The Tigers changed the lead once more in the third after driving in three more runs to go up, 5-2. Sophomore Schae Dickson's two-run double and score off a wild pitch drew the teams even again at 5-5 by the end of the third.

Another three runs in the fourth inning put Princeton up three one more time (8-5) and extra-base hits from freshman Angie Rizzi (RBI triple in the bottom of the fourth) and Princeton's Mikayla Blaska gave the Tigers a 9-6 lead.

LIU powered its way back into a tie with a pair of home runs from sophomore Samantha Offenback (solo homer in the fifth) and junior Nereyda Gutierrez (two-run homer in the sixth).

The Blackbirds were able to fend off Princeton's final bases loaded rally in the seventh inning but couldn't keep the Tigers' three runs in the eighth off the board. Zamora contributed another run to LIU's tally with a sacrifice fly in the eighth but the Blackbirds left three of their own on base to end the game.

GAME 2: LIU 1, BINGHAMTON 8
Both teams were quiet for the first four innings of the game with neither leaving more than two runners on base in any set of at-bats. The Bearcats scored first off a wild pitch from pitcher Tallie Woodson in the fifth inning and added another on a one-out RBI double.

The visitors' lead would expand from two to eight run after a six-run, five-hit sixth inning that saw LIU concede runs via wild pitch, home run and single.

A late-inning RBI double from Dickson accounted for the Blackbirds' lone score.

NEUTRAL GAME
In the final game of the day, Princeton shut out Binghamton, 6-0.
