STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The LIU Brooklyn baseball team dropped two games to Stony Brook University Thursday afternoon, falling in the first game, 15-11, and dropping the second on a walk-off single, 1-0. With the losses, LIU moves to 4-6 on the season. The conclusion of the series, scheduled to take place Friday, March 10, has been canceled due to inclement weather.

In the first game of the day, the Blackbirds led through six innings before Stony Brook broke the game open in the bottom of the eighth frame.

Senior Charles Misiano led the game off with a triple to right center, and LIU went up 2-0 on the next batter, when junior Dom Paiotti hit a home run to right field. The Blackbirds kept the ball rolling when sophomore Joe Mercadante singled to get on base, and scored two batters later on a wild pitch. And sophomore Luis Arias de los Santos would give the Blackbirds a 4-0 lead with an RBI single to left field that scored junior Andrew Turner.

A wild pitch, two walks and three hits would score five runs for the Seawolves in the bottom of the frame, but LIU would retake the lead in the top of the second. Paiotti would triple and score on a throw, while Mercadante scored on a balk to put LIU back on top, 6-5.

A single home run for Stony Brook in the third tied the game up at six, but LIU tacked on two more runs in the top of the fourth, when senior Harrison Preschel tripled to right center field. The Blackbirds scored three more in the top of the sixth. Paiotti would score on an error, and junior Andrew Turner added two runs to the board with his RBI single up the middle, and LIU led, 11-6.

Stony Brook scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but the damage came in the bottom of the eighth, when the Seawolves would use five hits to score seven runs, and take the lead for good, 15-11.

Sophomore Mike Kreiger (0-1) had the loss on the mound for LIU. Junior Dom Paiotti led the Blackbirds at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two RBI and three runs scored. Harrison Preschel and Andrew Turner also had two RBI and multi-hit games for LIU.

The second game of the day, shortened to seven innings, was a pitchers' duel. Senior Nick Freijomil pitched the complete game for LIU, holding Stony Brook to just five hits and one unearned run, while striking out four. Stony Brook used two pitchers over six innings, who held LIU to just two hits and no runs, while striking out six combined batters.

Freijomil held the Seawolves hitless until a single in the bottom of the third inning. The senior would get the next two out, and escaped the inning with no damage done.

The Blackbirds had a chance to score to in the top of the fourth, when three walks loaded the bases. The Seawolves changed pitchers and got a strike out swinging to end the inning, keeping the game scoreless.

Sophomore William Jackson III had a single in the top of the fifth, and was advanced on a bunt by Arias, but the left fielder was caught stealing, and the game stayed at 0-0. Joe Mercadante had a single in the top of the sixth and stole second to get another Blackbird in scoring position, but a ground out ended the frame with 0s on the board.

Stony Brook finally broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the seventh inning with a walk-off RBI single, and the home team completed the two game sweep.

The series conclusion, originally slated to take place Friday, March 10, has been canceled due to inclement weather.
