Women’s Tennis Rallies to Defeat Stony Brook, 4-3

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The LIU Brooklyn women's tennis team rallied from a loss in the doubles point and two straight singles defeats to come back and beat Stony Brook Saturday afternoon, 4-3. With the win, the Blackbirds finish the regular season with a 10-5 record in dual matches.

Stony Brook shot out to an early lead with two quick wins in doubles. The Seawolves had a 6-1 win in the No. 1 doubles spot, and clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win in the No. 2 spot. The match at No. 3, where freshman Jennifer Gogova and senior Isabella Wagener were leading, 5-3, was stopped when the point was clinched.

Stony Brook started singles play leading 1-0, and used two straight set wins at the bottom of the lineup to go up, 3-0. Freshman Ana Leonte fell at No. 5 singles to Ana Carrion Rodriguez, 6-1, 6-2, and Wagener fell to Amanda Foo at No. 6, 6-2, 6-0 before the Blackbirds would get on the board.

All four of LIU's single wins came in three set battles at the top of the lineup.

Freshman Sasha Bollweg was the first to score a team point for LIU, when she defeated Yana Nikolaeva at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1. Gogova closed the lead to 3-2 with her defeat of Nadia Smergut at No. 3 singles, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4, and sophomore Anna Grigoryan tied the match up with her win at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1. And sophomore Malin Leysen clinched the match victory for LIU, when she won at No. 4 singles, 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-4.

The win wraps up the regular season for the Blackbirds. Up next, LIU heads to West Winsor, New Jersey, to take part in the 2017 Northeast Conference women's tennis championship tournament, Friday, April 21 to Sunday, April 23.
