EMMITSBURG, MD. – The LIU Brooklyn women's lacrosse team led the Mountaineers at halftime, but couldn't hold its Northeast Conference opponents' second half surge off, falling to Mount St. Mary's, 12-10 Friday afternoon. Freshman
Bianca Santucci led the Blackbirds with four goals.
The Mount would get on the board first, scoring a goal just 40 seconds into the game. But then Santucci went to work, scoring four straight goals over the next six minutes. The first three were unassisted, with the fourth coming off a pass from junior
Sierra O'Connor, a goal that put the Blackbirds on top 4-1.
Though Mount would score once more, seniors
Tori Shinkowitz and
Jillian May scored back to back goals, assisted by
Candice Mosal and
Mackenzie Rolland, to put LIU on top, 6-2. The home team would score twice more, but the Blackbirds took a 6-4 lead into the half time break.
The Mount got the early momentum at the start of the second half, scoring two goals in the first 45 seconds to tie the game up, 6-6. Another goal two minutes later gave MSM its first lead in over 30 minutes, but it was short lived. Shinkowitz would score an unassisted goal just 40 seconds later that tied the game up once more, 7-7. The senior repeated the feat ten minutes later. Mount would score to take an 8-7 lead, and Shinkowitz completed the hat trick, scoring with 16 minutes left to play to tie it up, 8-8.
Mount would take the lead once more with 14 minutes to play, 9-8, but this time, it was senior
Mary McQueen who would score the unassisted equalizer, knotting the game up, 9-9 with 13 minutes left to play.
The next time the Mountaineers scored, however, LIU was not able to answer, and over a five-minute span, the home team scored three straight, taking the lead 12-9. O'Connor would score a goal off a pass from Shinkowitz with three minutes left to spark some hope for the Blackbirds, but the comeback effort fell short, and Mount took the 12-10 win.
Sophomore
Virginia Gibbons finished with 11 saves in net, while Shinkowitz finished with three goals, an assists, five ground balls, four draw controls and two caused turnovers.
Up next, the Blackbirds head to Staten Island, N.Y. to take on Wagner, Sunday, April 23 at 11 a.m.
