WEST WINSOR, N.J. – The LIU Brooklyn women's tennis team made quick work of their first round opponents at the 2017 Northeast Conference Women's Tennis Championship Tournament, as the top-seeded Blackbirds defeated No. 8 seeded St. Francis Brooklyn, 4-0.
The Terriers did not contest the doubles point, and in singles, the Blackbirds dropped just two sets in total en route to the shutout win.
LIU had four quick straight set wins at the bottom of the lineup to clinch the win. Sophomore
Malin Leysen defeated her opponent at No. 4 singles without a single loss, 6-0, 6-0, and freshman
Ana Leonte was also perfect in her 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles.
Freshman
Jennifer Gogova had a 6-0, 6-1 win in the No. 3 singles spot, while senior
Isabella Wagener beat her foe at No. 6, 6-1, 6-0.
LIU was also winning in the top two singles spots when the match was called. Sophomore
Anna Grigoryan led her opponent at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 5-3, and freshman
Sasha Bollweg was up 6-1, 5-2 at No. 2 singles when the match ended.
With the quarterfinal win, the Blackbirds advance to the semifinals of the tournament, taking on an opponent to be determined, Saturday, April 22 at 9 a.m.
